dc.description.translationabstract | The purpose of this article is to examine the operation of Hakuai Hospital–the biggest business of the Formosa government in southern China–its work, and its relationship with Japan’s continental policy. _x000D_ During the Japanese occupation and rule, the Formosa government had three focuses–education, newspaper and hospital. As to the historical facts of Hakuai Hospital, Professor Nakamura has stated in detail, but the author of this article thinks that the connection between Hakuai Hospital and Japan’s continental policy can be further studied. In fact, there were two purposes of the three cultural focuses mentioned above: superficially, it was a way to show Sino-Japanese kindness; however, substantially, it was to support the hidden power. Therefore, his paper _x000D_ attempts to raise some questions and answer them. For example, how could Hakuai Hospital, which advocated charity, carry out these two purposes? What difficulties they met? What was the effect of their efforts? In addition, how was the Hospital _x000D_ affected by the anti-Japan movement?
