dc.description.translationabstract | This study analyzes currencies circulating through contracts in the Qing Dynasty based on five ancient writing collections published in Nantou County. The findings of this research reveal that Nantou showed little difference from other regions of Taiwan in regards to the currency it used. While some currencies in the Zhushan, Caotun, and Puli areas of Nantou County were the same, there is still variation and this should be ascribed to historical factors. Most notable was the fact that there were fewer currency types at Puli, while a greater variety existed at Zhushan and Caotun. The practice of adding “Qidui” and “Kuping”(both are currency exchange rates) to Buddha Coins as explanatory phrases in contracts during the reigns of the Tongzhi and Guangxu Emperors was less common at Zhushan than at Caotun. This phenomenon seems to indicate that, while Zhushan came into existence earlier, Caotun was influenced by more diverse historical factors and was more culturally diverse, in addition to having a more active business climate, after the reigns of the Tongzhi and Guangxu Emperors
